Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare-Book Talk

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare-Blog

Last month I read “Lady Midnight” by Cassandra Clare and IT WAS EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED IN THIS BOOK AHHHH. I waited a bit to type out my thoughts because right after i finished “Lady Midnight” i was a mess and i don’t think my post would have been coherent. As you can tell i loved it sooo much. I wish i could have read it in one sitting but unfortunately school and assignments exist so that didn’t happen. One of my favourite things of this book is that Cassandra Clare’s writing style improved a lot in comparison to “City of Bones” which is her very first novel. I also loved how we already knew the main characters from “City of Heavenly Fire” and because they already knew the world and we knew the Shadowhunter world so well it made it more fun to read since there wasn’t much world building. As always i loved how Cassandra Clare entwined all the different story lines and all the characters from her other Shadowhunter chronicles. I absolutely loved Cassandra Clare’s new instalment in her Shadowhunter Chronicles and i cannot wait to read more. If you haven’t already started any of the Shadowhunter chronicles i highly recommend you do they are full of magic, romance and humour that will leave you wanting to only read in this world forever.

Goodreads summary

In a kingdom by the sea…
In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.
A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.
Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.
Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?
The darkly magical world of Shadowhunters has captured the imaginations of millions of readers across the globe. Join the adventure in Lady Midnight, the long-awaited first volume of a new trilogy from Cassandra Clare.

Now i am going to spoil the book so if you haven’t read “Lady Midnight” or any of the other Shadowhunter chronicles and Tales of Shadowhunter Academy then i suggest you read it before you read this discussion. I’m not going to be going into a lot of detail like i would like to, instead i’m just going to talk about the parts that really stood out to me and of course my favourite parts.

So, the first character that we get introduced to is Kit. I knew he was going to be an important character in the book but i had NO FREAKING CLUE he was going to be The Lost Herondale a.k.a. Christopher Herondale. Like i swear to god when Tessa said “Come on now”, “On your feet, Christopher Herondale. We’ve been looking for you a long time” i dropped my book (don’t worry i just dropped it on my bed) and i was like shitshitshit-holyfreakingcrap-whatevenishappening. I was so happy though and now he”l live with the Blackthorne family and Emma and it’ll be the best thing ever ahhhhhh i can’t wait. And i think Ty and Kit (Christopher) might become really good freinds maybe even parabatai!! This was definitely one of the biggest revelations after the whole Malcolm thing.

So one of my favourite parts of this book was ho Cassandra Clare managed to include nearly all of my favourite characters from her other Shadowhunter books into this book and it gave me all the feels. (except i would have loved to have a whole chapter on Simon and Izzy’s engagement party. Maybe Cassie could write a novella on that and how Simon proposed also WHEN ARE JACE AND CLARY GOING TO GET MARRIED AHHHHHHH AND WHEN ARE JEM AND TESSA GETTING MARRIED. And Cassie another favour? Can you write about that too? hehehe) Like reading Emma talk bout Jace in a ‘celebrity’ way made me giggle so much and hearing about Max and Raphael made my smile so much that my cheeks hurt i loved how Cassie was able to include them in parts of the book without seeming too force-full.

And oh my god Emma and Julian’s relationship is just the best. I loved how they had the cute secret hand language that they used even when they didn’t need to be secretive. And that Julian had his whole studio full of paintings of Emma, i kinda had and idea that it was full of Emma paintings but i still loved reading that scene. Okay so about the whole falling-in-love-with-your-parabatai-makes-you-stronger-and-you-go-crazy-and-die thing, i was NOT expecting that. I hope they can be in love and still be parabatai tho because then they could be like a power-couple kinda like Jace and Clary.

Okay so now for the major shocking revelation. MALCOM IS THE GUARDIAN???!!! WHAT??!! I honestly had no freaking clue. He was so sweet and loving and i genuinely thought he loved the Blackthornes. And since Emma got struck with the dark magic i have a feeling something might happen to her like maybe something might go wrong with the Parabatai bond more than it has already. And now Tatiana is alive what the hell?? Hopefully Malcolm is really dead. I definitely don’t want him to be alive not while Tatiana is alive again.

So, can we talk about that ending for one second? When Mark was like “why pretend?” to Emma i was like omg no ew, they can’t be together for real, Emma and Julian forever. Also can we talk about the love triangle-square thing? I liked Christina and Mark and then Kieran cam and i was like awww they are kinda cute but then after Kieran made Julian and Emma suffer just because he was jealous of Mark makes me so mad. And then Perfect Diego came in and i was knew Christina and Perfect Diego need to get back together like a.s.a.p, i just hope he doesn’t turn out to be evil like Malcolm.

So i really loved the dialogue in this book (as i do all Cassie’s books) but this is just one of the conversations that made me laugh and trust me there are too many for my to write.

“I don’t want to die on the Pacific Coast Highway!” Sterling wailed.
“Oh, I’m sorry”. Emma’s voice dripped acid. “Is there a different highway you’d like to die on? BECAUSE WE CAN ARRANGE THAT!”
“Bitch”, Sterling said.
